PSG beat Lens to seal fifth consecutive league title

Paris Saint-Germain have been crowned Ligue 1 champions for the fifth consecutive season after defeating RC Lens 2-0 at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night. The victory secured PSG’s record-extending 14th French league title, with Luis Enrique’s side moving nine points clear of Lens with one match remaining in the season. PSG only needed a draw to clinch the title but got the job done comfortably through goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and teenager Ibrahim Mbaye. Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 29th minute after Ousmane Dembélé intercepted a poor pass from Lens defender Malang Sarr before setting up the Georgian winger, who finished clinically. Mbaye then wrapped up the victory deep into stoppage time, smashing home a pass from Désiré Doué off the crossbar to confirm another league triumph for the Paris club. Despite the defeat, Lens created several chances but were repeatedly denied by PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov, who produced a number of key saves during the match. Speaking after the game, PSG manager Luis Enrique admitted the contest was difficult and praised Lens for their performance. “Without a doubt this was difficult, Lens did so well this season,” he said. “I think they deserved more tonight but Matvei Safonov was incredible tonight.” Safonov also acknowledged that his side benefited from missed opportunities by Lens attackers. “I had some luck today. If my opponents had put their shots a bit more either side of me it would have been different,” the goalkeeper said. The title marks the third Ligue 1 triumph under Luis Enrique since his arrival in 2023, with PSG now chasing a historic treble this season after already winning the French Super Cup. The French champions will next face Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final on May 30 in Budapest, while Lens will prepare for the French Cup final against OGC Nice on May 22.
