Tunisia’s head coach, Kamel Saada, is optimistic that his team can cause an upset when they face tournament favourites Nigeria in their opening match at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The North African side, known as Les Aigles de Carthage, will lock horns with the Super Falcons on Sunday, July 6, in Casablanca, Morocco. Nigeria, nine-time champions and the most successful team in the history of the competition, are strong contenders to top Group B, which also includes Algeria and Botswana. Despite the tough draw, Saada believes Tunisia can make a significant impact. “It’s a tough group. Everyone knows the quality of Nigeria. Algeria is improving fast. Botswana too. We’re not underestimating anyone,” Saada told CAF’s official website. “We’ll need to be disciplined, focused, and play our best football. The team that plays smart, cohesive football can pull off surprises. We’re preparing for that seriously.” Tunisia reached the knockout stage at the last edition of the tournament and will be hoping to build on that momentum this time around. WAFCON 2024 will be hosted by Morocco from Saturday, July 5 to Saturday, July 26, 2025, featuring 12 competing nations. South Africa’s Banyana Banyana are the defending champions.
