VIDEO: Today’s Nollywood films are watery — Francis Odega

Nollywood actor Francis Odega has expressed concern over what he described as the declining quality of Nigerian films, saying productions from the industry’s earlier years were stronger and more memorable than those being made today. Odega made the remarks during a recent episode of the Where Is the Lie podcast, where he reflected on the evolution of the movie industry. According to him, films from his generation were more carefully crafted, unlike many contemporary productions. The actor attributed the perceived decline to the growing practice of stretching a single script into several instalments, a trend he said weakens storytelling. “Nollywood of then is better than Nollywood now. Yeah, because then we can do a movie, one script can just give you one movie. But now one script can give you seven movies, which is not right. It’s watery. “It’s better you do one movie that is tight, that is a hook but now you can use one movie and make it watery and nothing. Even me, I don’t watch movies.” Odega, who said he has spent over three decades in the industry, also reflected on his role in the early days of Nollywood before it gained global recognition. He recalled that the industry’s professional body was initially known as the Nigerian Actors Guild before it later became the Actors Guild of Nigeria.
