UEFA opens probe into alleged racist incident involving Vinícius

UEFA has confirmed it has opened a formal investigation into allegations of racial abuse during the Champions League Round of 16 playoff first-leg match between Real Madrid and Benfica. The European governing body said it has appointed an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to examine claims made by Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior, who alleged he was subjected to racial insults during the encounter. According to the complaint, Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni directed offensive language at the Brazilian on multiple occasions. Vinícius’ teammate, Kylian Mbappé, reportedly supported the allegation, stating he heard the term “monkey” used towards Vinícius several times during the match. In response, Prestianni denied the accusation in a statement posted on social media, insisting that his comments were misinterpreted and rejecting any suggestion of racist intent. UEFA said further details will be provided once the investigation is complete, reiterating its zero-tolerance stance toward racism and discrimination in European football.
