Turkish expert questions Onuachu’s tactical fit despite stellar form

Turkish football analyst Erdal Hoş has criticised Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu, arguing that his limited pressing ability makes him a tactical liability despite his impressive goal return. Onuachu has been one of the standout performers in the Süper Lig this season. Since completing a reported €5.7 million move from Southampton FC to Trabzonspor, the 31-year-old striker has scored 16 goals and provided one assist in 19 league appearances, playing a key role in the club’s push for the title. Nicknamed the “Black Sea Storm,” Trabzonspor currently sit third in the league table with 45 points from 22 matches, with Onuachu contributing to more than a third of the team’s goals. However, Hoş believes the Nigerian forward’s success is largely due to head coach Fatih Tekke adapting his tactical system to compensate for perceived weaknesses. “If you’re playing with Onuachu, you’re a man down in defense,” Hoş said. “You can’t pressure with Onuachu, and when you do, he finds space easily. Onuachu loses the ball a lot with his back turned. He’s a great goal-scorer, but if he’s playing, your midfield and wings need to be top-notch.” Despite the criticism, Onuachu’s clinical finishing and physical presence have significantly boosted Trabzonspor’s attacking output this season. As the campaign progresses, the Super Eagles striker will be expected to maintain his scoring form as the club continues its pursuit of domestic honours.
