Manchester City claimed their eighth FA Cup title after a brilliant late strike from Antoine Semenyo secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Semenyo produced the defining moment of the final with an audacious back-flick finish from Erling Haaland’s cross, sealing victory for Pep Guardiola’s side in a tense and scrappy encounter. The Ghanaian winger’s sublime effort handed City their second trophy of the season following their League Cup triumph over Arsenal in March. Semenyo, who joined City from Bournemouth during the January transfer window, etched his name alongside legendary FA Cup final scorers such as Ricky Villa, Michael Owen, Roberto Di Matteo and Steven Gerrard. Ironically, the 26-year-old was born close to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge home in west London. The victory ended City’s run of back-to-back FA Cup final defeats against Crystal Palace and Manchester United. For Guardiola, the triumph marked his 20th trophy during his decade-long spell with Manchester City, having previously lifted the FA Cup in 2019 and 2023. City’s attention now turns back to the Premier League title race, where they remain in pursuit of Arsenal. Guardiola’s side, unbeaten in 21 domestic matches, could move within two points of Arsenal with victory over Bournemouth in their penultimate league fixture. Speaking ahead of his 24th appearance at Wembley as City manager, Guardiola joked that he was “so disappointed” not to have a stand named after him at the famous stadium. Speculation, however, continues to surround the future of the Spanish manager, who has only one year remaining on his contract and has yet to indicate whether he will remain at the club beyond this season. For Chelsea, the defeat added to an already difficult campaign. The London club, managed on an interim basis by Calum McFarlane, remain without a win in seven league matches and sit ninth on the table with fading hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League. Chelsea supporters also staged protests against the club’s owners, BlueCo, before kick-off, chanting “we want our Chelsea back” as frustration over the team’s struggles continued to grow. Despite dominating possession for much of the first half, City found it difficult to break down Chelsea’s defensive setup before Semenyo’s moment of brilliance settled the contest.
