World number one Aryna Sabalenka claimed her second consecutive Miami Open title on Sunday, defeating Coco Gauff 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to complete a remarkable “Sunshine Double” sweep of Indian Wells and Miami. With the victory, Sabalenka becomes only the fifth woman to win both prestigious early-season WTA 1000 tournaments in the same year, and the first since Iga Świątek achieved the feat in 2022. Reacting after the match, Sabalenka expressed pride in her achievement.“It means a lot. My goal has always been to put my name in history, and I just did it,” she said. The Belarusian now joins an elite list that includes Steffi Graf, Kim Clijsters and Victoria Azarenka. Sabalenka underlined her dominance this season, with her only loss coming in the final of the Australian Open to Elena Rybakina—a rival she has since beaten in both the Indian Wells final and the Miami semi-finals. The match began with Sabalenka in control, as she powered through the opening set without facing a break point. Gauff responded strongly in the second set, improving her returns and breaking Sabalenka to level the contest. However, the deciding set belonged to Sabalenka, who regained control early with a break and sealed victory with another decisive break on match point. The defeat marked Gauff’s first career loss in a hardcourt final, having previously won her first nine—including her triumph over Sabalenka at the US Open in 2023. Reflecting on the match, Sabalenka praised her opponent’s resilience.“I knew she was going to fight. I’m really happy with how I managed my emotions and stayed focused,” she said. The win caps an exceptional month for Sabalenka, both professionally and personally, as she celebrates two major titles alongside significant milestones off the court.
