Ruins of power: Inside Ladoke Akintola forgotten estate

The long-neglected estate of the late Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola in Ogbomoso, Oyo State has remained abandoned for years, overrun by bush, decay and vandalism. Akintola, a senior lawyer and politician, was the last Premier of the Western Region and one of Nigeria’s notable founding figures. His legacy lives on through the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, which bears his name. Residents living around the estate say the deserted property had become unsafe and uninhabitable, raising concerns about security and dangerous animals. Relief, however, has followed confirmation that the estate has now been handed over to LAUTECH, with plans underway to renovate and put the property to productive use after decades of neglect.
