Police arrest suspect in viral video assaulting woman over pot of soup

The Abia State Police Command on Sunday said it has arrested a suspect captured in a viral video assaulting a woman, adding that he will be charged with assault and attempted murder. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the arrest was made on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, adding that the suspect, Agwu Ukpo, male, 37, is from Akanu Ohafia in Abia State. The statement read, “Leveraging on actionable intelligence, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, Abia Command, have apprehended the above-mentioned suspect, who was captured in a viral video assaulting one Amarachi Chiyere over a dispute relating to a pot of soup.” The police said the case is currently under discreet investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), adding that the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations. The Command strongly condemned the act, describing it as barbaric and inhumane, and reiterating that such behaviour is unacceptable under any circumstances. Members of the public were urged to desist from all forms of violence. “The Command remains fully committed to ensuring justice is served in the state and that perpetrators of crime will be made to face the full weight of the law,” the statement added.
