Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has admitted the club would be prepared to sell captain Marc Guehi during the January transfer window if their valuation is met. The England international, whose contract expires in the summer, has attracted strong interest from Manchester City, who are considering a move amid defensive injury concerns. Palace previously blocked a £35 million bid from Liverpool last summer but now face the risk of losing the 25-year-old on a free transfer at the end of the season. City’s pursuit of Guehi has intensified following injuries to defenders Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias sustained during Sunday’s draw with Chelsea. From this month, the defender is eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club. Glasner stressed that while sporting considerations favour keeping the Palace captain, financial realities could force a different decision. “If you’re just valuing sports, everyone in the club will say Marc has to stay,” he said. “The chairman will tell you the same. But it’s not one-dimensional. If you see the financial situation, it’s very important. “There will be a threshold where the club has to say it will happen – as long as Marc says ‘I want to leave’, because the final decision is always with the player.” Guehi played a key role in Palace’s successful 2024–25 campaign, helping the club finish 12th in the Premier League and secure their first-ever European qualification by winning the FA Cup. The Eagles went on to lift the Community Shield in August, defeating Premier League champions Liverpool on penalties. Palace are currently 14th in the league and have progressed to the knockout phase play-offs of the Uefa Conference League. Reflecting on last summer’s transfer window, Glasner said the club turned down several offers in order to pursue a successful season. “The chairman rejected many offers in the summer because we wanted to play a successful season and wanted to win the Community Shield,” he said. “Marc is important, and that’s why the offer was rejected. “The threshold at that time was not reached. Maybe it was close, but it was not above.”
