Osimhen, Adams Fire Nigeria into AFCON Semifinals with 2–0 Win Over Algeria

Nigeria’s Super Eagles booked their place in the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a commanding 2–0 victory over Algeria on Saturday evening in Marrakesh, thanks to second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams. After a dominant but goalless first half, Nigeria turned on the style after the restart to overwhelm the Desert Foxes in a quarterfinal clash that underlined their growing authority in the tournament. The Super Eagles had controlled large portions of the opening 45 minutes, creating several chances and forcing Algeria onto the back foot. Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi were particularly lively, while Akor Adams and Osimhen both tested the Algerian defence. However, despite six shots on target, Nigeria could not find a breakthrough before the interval, with goalkeeper Luca Zidane and some last-ditch defending keeping the score at 0–0. Nigeria’s persistence was finally rewarded just minutes into the second half. In the 49th minute, Bruno Onyemaechi delivered a fine cross from the left flank, and Osimhen rose at the far post to glance a precise header beyond Zidane and into the net. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Nigerian players and supporters, as the Super Eagles took a deserved lead. Buoyed by the opener, Nigeria continued to press forward with confidence, forcing Algeria deeper into their own half. Osimhen almost doubled the advantage shortly afterwards, but his header was comfortably gathered by Zidane. Algeria attempted to respond by making a series of substitutions, introducing Baghdad Bounedjah, Anis Hadj-Moussa and Adil Boulbina in a bid to inject fresh energy into their attack. However, it was Nigeria who struck again. In the 57th minute, Iwobi split the Algerian defence with a delightful through ball to Osimhen. Showing great awareness, the Napoli striker squared the ball to Akor Adams, who calmly dribbled past the onrushing Zidane before rolling the ball into the empty net to make it 2–0. From that point on, the Super Eagles were firmly in control. Algeria tried to mount a comeback, but Nigeria’s defence, marshalled by Calvin Bassey and William Troost-Ekong, stood strong. Bassey produced a crucial recovery tackle to deny Amoura a clear run on goal, while goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali remained largely untroubled despite a late knock that briefly required medical attention. Nigeria had chances to extend their lead further, with Adams hitting the post in the 82nd minute after another swift counterattack involving Osimhen. Onyemaechi also continued to cause problems down the left, sending in dangerous crosses that kept the Algerian defence under constant pressure. As the clock wound down, Nigeria’s coach Eric Chelle made a series of substitutions to manage the game, bringing on Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Chidozie Awaziem and later Igoh Ogbu, while Osimhen was given a standing ovation as he left the pitch in the closing moments. Despite Algeria enjoying more possession in the final minutes, they were unable to find a way back, as Nigeria expertly saw out the six minutes of added time to secure a famous and convincing victory. The win sends Nigeria into the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations, keeping their hopes of continental glory firmly alive. For Algeria, it was a disappointing end to their campaign, as they failed to match the intensity and quality of a Super Eagles side that looked every inch a title contender on the night.
