Man United Crash Out of FA Cup After Brighton Defeat

Manchester United’s turbulent season took another blow on Sunday as they were knocked out of the FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford. The loss came at the end of a difficult week for the Premier League giants, who had sacked head coach Ruben Amorim just days earlier. The result was met with loud jeers from home supporters and is likely to confirm another trophyless campaign for the club. Former United striker Danny Welbeck proved the difference, scoring Brighton’s winning goal in the 64th minute. Benjamin Sesko’s late header pulled one back for the hosts, but it was only a consolation as Brighton saw out the victory in the third-round tie. As a result, the club will play the minimum of 40 competitive matches expected of a top-flight side this term. With their cup hopes over, United’s only remaining chance of silverware lies in the Premier League. However, that appears a daunting task, with the 20-time champions currently sitting seventh on the table, 17 points behind leaders Arsenal with 17 games still to play. United are now focusing on stabilising their season under interim management, with the club reportedly in talks with former players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick about taking charge until the end of the campaign. Youth team coach Darren Fletcher, who has overseen the last two games since Amorim’s departure, and former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy are also among the contenders being considered.
