MAN DIES WHILE ACTING CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS IN CROSS RIVER, NIGERIA.

somber mood has descended on the Holy Cross Catholic Parish in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, after a devoted parishioner lost his life during the church’s traditional dramatization of the Passion of Christ.
Michael Obeten, fondly known as “English Man,” a 40-year-old 2012 graduate of Mass Communication from the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), was playing the role of Jesus Christ when the incident occurred on Good Friday.

According to eyewitnesses and family sources, Obeten was in character during a scene involving simulated special effects, including the discharge of a cannon or gunpowder device (a gunpowder device intended to simulate thunder or add dramatic realism) intended to add realism to the depiction of Christ’s suffering. A fragment from the blast reportedly struck him in the head, leading to his death.

Obeten had portrayed Jesus in the annual Passion Play for several years, earning admiration for his commitment and reverence. Parishioners described him as someone who did not merely act the role but approached it with deep personal devotion.

Church leaders and local authorities are investigating the exact circumstances, particularly the use of explosive effects in the outdoor or stage performance. No foul play is suspected; it is being treated as a tragic accident.

This sad event has sparked discussions about safety measures during religious dramatizations that aim for realism. Condolences have poured in from the community, with many praying for the repose of his soul and comfort for his family.

May his soul rest in peace.
