Riyad Mahrez scored his third goal in two matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as Algeria defeated Burkina Faso 1–0 in Rabat to secure qualification for the last 16. The former Manchester City winger struck from the penalty spot in the first half after Ismahila Ouedraogo brought down an Algerian attacker in the area. Mahrez calmly dispatched the spot-kick low into the corner, leaving Burkina Faso goalkeeper Herve Koffi with no chance. Burkina Faso responded with intent, as Pierre Kabore went close on two occasions before the break but failed to find an equaliser. After the interval, the Stallions continued to apply pressure but struggled to create clear chances, registering their first shot on target only in the 82nd minute. At the other end, Koffi was kept busy, producing a series of fine saves to deny Algeria on the counter. The victory lifts Algeria to the top of Group E with six points. Burkina Faso and Sudan are level on three points following Sudan’s 1–0 win over Equatorial Guinea earlier on Sunday, a result that confirmed the elimination of the Equatoguineans. The final round of Group E matches will be played on Wednesday at 16:00 GMT, with Algeria facing Equatorial Guinea in Rabat, while Burkina Faso take on Sudan in Casablanca.
