LG poll: Kogi PDP seeks deadline extension

The Kogi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has threatened to take legal action against the State Independent Electoral Commission if it fails to extend the timetable for the party’s participation in the forthcoming local government elections. In a letter dated January 19, 2026, and addressed to KOSIEC, the PDP Chairman, Muhammed Gambo, attributed the party’s inability to meet earlier deadlines to prolonged litigation over its leadership. Gambo said the party is now fully prepared to participate in the electoral process and comply with any revised timelines approved by the commission. He stated that KOSIEC, “In line with the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act, has discretionary powers to regulate local government elections, including adjusting schedules where necessary. “The PDP’s internal leadership issues have been resolved, granting an extension would serve the interests of fairness, equity and credible elections.” Related News I’m an arrogant Nigerian, I don’t have dual citizenship — Fashola Suspended Ondo ADC chair faults leadership, threatens legal action APC pledges hitch-free registration, targets 350,000 members in Oyo Gambo added that the party had not received any official communication from KOSIEC since he assumed office and warned that failure to grant the request could result in legal action. In its response, the KOSIEC Chairman, Mamman Eri, cited statutory constraints, noting that “Granting an extension would violate provisions of the Kogi State Electoral Law and undermine fairness, equity and transparency.” The commission listed deadlines that had already elapsed, including party primaries held on December 12, 2025; collection of nomination forms on December 19, 2025; and submission of candidates on January 9, 2026. Despite the disagreement, Gambo assured KOSIEC of the PDP’s commitment to working with the commission and other stakeholders to ensure free, fair and credible local government elections in the state.
