Late strikes by Boulbina sends Algeria into AFCON quarter finals

Algeria secured a place in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday after edging past the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 in a dramatic encounter decided deep into extra time in Rabat. The tightly contested match appeared destined for a penalty shootout until winger Adil Boulbina struck in the 119th minute, breaking Congolese resistance and sending the Fennec Foxes through while ending Congo’s tournament hopes. Boulbina’s late goal sparked wild celebrations among Algerian supporters, with the predominantly white-and-green-clad crowd erupting in jubilation inside the stadium. Congo entered the contest full of confidence and produced a spirited performance, standing firm for long periods in a physically demanding game. However, Algeria dominated possession for much of the match, pinning the Congolese defence back and forcing them into constant scrambling under sustained pressure. The encounter was also marked by the emotional presence of renowned Congolese superfan Michel Nkuka Mboladinga. At kick-off, he stood elevated above the crowd with his right arm raised in a pose honouring slain independence hero Patrice Lumumba, remaining motionless until half-time. He briefly lowered his arm to applaud fellow supporters before resuming the stance for the second half and extra time, eventually breaking down in tears at the final whistle. Despite the heartbreak, the Democratic Republic of Congo will now turn their attention to World Cup qualification. The Leopards are set to face either New Caledonia or Jamaica in March in a playoff for one of the final World Cup slots. Algeria, meanwhile, continue their AFCON campaign and will face Nigeria in a quarter-final clash in Marrakech on Saturday. The Super Eagles booked their place in the last eight with a commanding 4-0 victory over Mozambique on Monday.
