The leadership of the FUTO Students’ Union Government has formally raised concerns regarding the disbursement of departmental dues paid by students of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), calling for urgent intervention from the university management.
In an official correspondence addressed to the Vice-Chancellor through the Dean of Students’ Affairs, the Students’ Union President, Christopher Chukwuebuka J, highlighted complaints from several departmental executives and students who claim that funds collected as departmental dues are not being adequately released to the relevant student leadership structures.
The letter, dated February 16, 2026, noted that the issue has become a major concern across various departments in the institution. According to the SUG leadership, the current situation is affecting the ability of departmental and faculty executives to effectively carry out their duties and implement programs that benefit students.
Concerns From Departmental Executives
Departmental student leaders rely heavily on dues paid by students to organize academic programs, seminars, welfare activities, and initiatives that improve the academic and social life of students within their departments.
However, the Students’ Union Government stated that the funds collected are not being properly disbursed in line with established arrangements. This, the union said, has significantly slowed down departmental activities and leadership operations.
Speaking through the letter, the SUG President emphasized that the situation has limited the effectiveness of student leadership structures within the university.
According to him, departmental executives are finding it increasingly difficult to organize academic support programs, student welfare initiatives, and other activities aimed at improving the overall student experience.
The union leadership has therefore appealed to the university management to urgently review the current process involved in the disbursement of departmental dues.
The SUG is requesting that a transparent and efficient system be put in place to ensure that funds paid by students are promptly and fairly allocated to the appropriate departments and student executives.
Observers within the university community believe that addressing the issue will help strengthen accountability in the management of student funds and improve the performance of departmental leadership structures.
Commitment to Collaboration
Despite raising the concern, the Students’ Union Government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a cooperative relationship with the university administration.
President Christopher Chukwuebuka J stated that the union remains dedicated to working closely with the university authorities to promote transparency, effective governance, and improved welfare for students.
He further expressed optimism that the university management will review the current system and implement measures that ensure fairness and efficiency in the handling of departmental dues.
