The path to literacy has become a treacherous one as Students who embarked on this journey to be educated and enlightened have been subdued and have been met with conditions so unbearable they are being broken rather than built. It's a tragic irony that the youth meant to drive our future are being driven by ambulance due to negligence. The very system designed to nurture and protect us has left scars on our backs and the promise of a better tomorrow has been traded for a harsh reality that is systematically destroying our today.
Where are our leaders that promised us solution? The leaders that promised us solution have kept mute in the presence of commotion and have put up a laughable defence stating that the university admitted a large number of students and a first of its kind in the history of the school, which brings up the question, why did the SUG not make preparation for the large number of students that were admitted? Why was the welfare of students not prioritized?
New students who are meant to be met with favourable conditions are now being met with scars on their backs.
The students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri have voiced their discontent over the process of the semester CBT examination. As the semester’s CBT examinations begin, a recurring trend of systemic negligence has resurfaced. Students are forced to endure unbearable hours in disorganized queues without any provision of shelters from the scorching sun, with many suffering physical injuries and health crises. Disturbing video and picture evidence reveals students being flogged like cattle and carried in ambulance for medical attention while the Students’ Union Government (SUG) remains adamant to the cries of those they are sworn to protect as no official statement from the SUG has been released as of the time of publication of this article.
Next Media stands with the injured and traumatised students and formally calls upon the Students’ Union Government (SUG) and demands that they fulfil their constitutional mandate which is to take care of the welfare of its students and address these dehumanizing conditions. Leadership is defined by actions, not words nor promises. We demand an immediate intervention to ensure the safety, comfort and dignity of every FUTO student during this CBT period.
We challenge the SUG to rewrite the narrative and bring an
end to this heartbreaking torture students go through during CBT examinations, rules should be changed, timetables should be adjusted and shelter should be provided.
FUTO STUDENTS SUBJECTED TO EXAM TORTURE AS SUG REMAINS MUTE.
