The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a special intervention of N4 billion each for 12 selected universities, totaling N48 billion, to modernize engineering facilities and enhance practical training.
The funds, disbursed through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) under its Special High-Impact Intervention Projects, will support the rehabilitation of existing engineering workshops, construction of new facilities where needed, procurement of modern equipment, and alignment of infrastructure with current industry standards.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa (also referred to as Dr. Tunji Alausa), during the inauguration of the Ministerial Monitoring, Evaluation and Implementation Committee on TETFund Special High-Impact Intervention Projects in Abuja.
This initiative aims to transform engineering education by bridging the gap between theoretical learning and hands-on skills, fostering innovation, applied research, and better preparation of graduates for industry demands.
Among the beneficiary institutions is the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) in Imo State, alongside other Federal Universities of Technology such as those in Minna, Akure, Babura, and Ikot-Abasi, as well as the Nigerian Army University, Biu, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, and others representing various geopolitical zones.
The project is separate from TETFund's regular 2026 intervention allocations and forms part of broader efforts to strengthen technical education nationwide. Reports indicate that an additional N20 billion has been earmarked in the 2026 TETFund guidelines for similar upgrades to other institutions in future phases.
This development is expected to significantly boost research capabilities, practical learning, and overall academic quality at the selected universities, including FUTO.
