Benue killings: Ex-LP presidential aspirant urges Tinubu to end bloodshed

Former Labour Party presidential aspirant, Peter Agada, has urged President Bola Tinubu to take decisive steps to end the wave of killings across the country, saying Nigeria must be restored from what he described as “a republic of bloodshed” to a nation governed by law, peace and order.Agada made the call in Abuja on Saturday while reacting to the recent killings in the Akpachi and Otukpo-Nobi communities in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, where about 16 people were reportedly killed by gunmen. The latest attack has heightened concerns over insecurity in Benue, which has witnessed repeated violent attacks in recent years. While residents accused armed herders of carrying out the killings, the Benue State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria denied involvement and called for a thorough investigation by security agencies. In a statement, Agada criticised the Federal Government’s handling of insecurity, saying it must move beyond condolence visits and promises to take concrete action against criminal groups terrorising communities. He said, “President Bola Tinubu’s administration must stop being a government of empty ceremonial promises of security and rise to restore Nigeria from being a republic of bloodshed, which it is now, to one of law, order, peace, opportunity and prosperity.“Mr President must reinvent his administration into a digital-age security machine, one that has the cutting-edge capabilities to bring culprits to book and eradicate roving militia murderers, killer herdsmen, ransom bandits, bloodthirsty terrorists and their urban networks that aid them in any corner of Nigeria.Related NewsADC faults Tinubu’s economic policies, promises better dealBorno commissioner shares 15-second video of kidnapped students at summitTinubu signs crypto, virtual assets regulation order“Nigeria has more than enough resources to achieve this from what is connived, cornered and stolen in only a few government agencies or parastatals and from its annual budgets. What is lacking is the political will, sincerity and transparency of those implementing security policies.”Agada said he delayed commenting on the Otukpo attack to allow for verification of the casualty figures through government sources, eyewitnesses, first responders and members of his organisation, The Movement Nigeria.“I mourn and extend our heartfelt condolences to the survivors and immediate relatives of the dead. We condole with and pray God to grant overcoming strength to the Akpachi and Otukpo-Nobi communities, the Benue and Plateau State frontlines of horrific recurring pogroms, and every other part of Nigeria where the blood of innocent Nigerians has continued to be spilt,” he said.He argued that the persistent attacks by armed groups reflected the government’s failure to protect lives and property despite huge security budgets.Citing findings from studies conducted by his organisation, Agada claimed that more than 101,000 Nigerians were killed in violent attacks and other crimes between 2016 and 2021, adding that the country was recording more daily violent deaths than some countries at war.He appealed to governments at all levels to make the Otukpo killings “the last of their kind” by ensuring those responsible were identified and prosecuted.“President Bola Tinubu’s administration must stop being a government of funeral delegations, ephemeral consolation of genocide victims and empty ceremonial promises of security and rise to restore Nigeria from being a republic of bloodshed, which it is now, to one of law, order, peace, opportunity and prosperity,” he added.
