Defending champions Ivory Coast began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Mozambique in a Group F match played in Marrakech. Manchester United forward Amad Diallo scored the decisive goal shortly after half-time, rescuing the Elephants after they wasted several chances in a dominant first-half display against the 102nd-ranked Mozambicans. Ivory Coast controlled possession from the opening minutes and created a number of opportunities before the break, but were repeatedly denied by Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan, who made key saves to keep his side in the contest. Ghislain Konan also missed a clear chance when he fired wide after being picked out inside the box by Amad. The defending champions pushed for a second goal late on, with substitute Vakoun Bayo going close in stoppage time before Ernan and a last-ditch clearance from Guima prevented further damage. Ivory Coast held on to secure maximum points and take an early step in their quest to retain the title, a feat last achieved by Egypt in 2010. Mozambique will face Gabon in their next Group F fixture, while Ivory Coast are set for a high-profile clash against five-time champions Cameroon in Marrakech.
