ALUTA SPIRIT DWINDLES

Gone are the good old days. All arms, clubs, and associations have fallen down the pecking order, and the Student Union Government (SUG) no longer have the final say in Students' welfare. The SRCs, once a respected body, have lost their authority and no longer hold the various arms of the SUG accountable. The FUTO Bar Association has ceased to prosecute wrongdoing; journalists have ceased to be independent and journalists have become timid, scared and reluctant to speak the truth.

Gone are the good old days when student leaders like Comr. Frank Samuel, Hon. Ola Ishola, Comr. Okorie Sunray, and others who courageously stood up for what was right and fought tirelessly for the students' welfare.

We reminisce about the good old days when we had fearless journalists like Nwagboso Ifeanyi, Chibuzor Sipisi, Zubby Infoscope, sir Charles, Manume Excel and others who boldly spoke out against injustice.

The era of student leaders like Comr. Snow, Comr. Eugene Grand, Patriot Edeh Stephen of the Man O' War, Comr. Loveday Emmanuel, and many others who fought for the welfare of Nigerian students is now a distant memory.

Leadership has become politicized. The Aluta spirit, which once drove student activism, is dying, and students may never again experience the peace and progress that came from having courageous leaders and a free press that fearlessly advocated for them.

Too bad that the few leaders who want to make a change are now being fought by the system and god-fatherism has taken hold of the great plans of potential student leaders and have dashed them to the floor all in the name of politics.

Gone are the good old days when there was freedom of the press and supremacy of the law.
